An Irish mafia story with an interesting cast: Donnie Wahlberg, Rose McGowan, Amanda Peet, and Will Arnett. It’s strange, but I like it! I’d totally settle in with this film again sometime. I love the shaky handheld camera. Everything feels immensely authentic, like we are just watching everyday life in South Boston. It gives me nostalgia for the ‘90s something fierce. I’ll go ahead and call this an underrated gem!
A very Irish movie about internalizing anger and guilt instead of just dealing with it. Which isn't a judgement by the way... It's actually the correct way with dealing with it.

No idea why this seems to have such a bad rap here, it's a nice enough little directorial debut that's clearly written by a couple of pals from Southie.
If we compare this 'American Irish wanna-be-Godfather mob flick' to other titles in Donnie Wahlberg's filmography, it isn't as good as 'Saw IV'.
So no, I wouldn't recommend it.
Flawed as it may be, Southie exudes local flavor providing one of the finest cinematic looks at South Boston. What it lacks in innovation it makes up for in authenticity, capturing it's time and it's place with a local's eye.
Wahlberg is fantastic, making it curious why he never achieved anywhere near the level of fame as Mark. McGowan is also a standout.
The character who interested me the most was Whitey, played by a pre-Arrested Development Will Arnett. He's the classic gangster film archetype of the Best Friend who thinks he's moving up the criminal ladder, but is in way over his head. Still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Donnie Wahlberg, Will Arnett, and Amanda Peet were all in the same place career-wise in the late 1990s to make this low-budget crime drama with Lawrence Tierney and Anne Meara as revered elders. This is objectively a two-star movie, but I love the '90s and the subject of prickly Bostonians has aged well thanks to the as flavorful and much better subsequent movies it evokes (things like little brother's The Departed and The Fighter). The brief sighting of the Jungle 2 Jungle bus alone warrants that half-star bump.
Like an extended Oz character introduction, where they show you what happened for them to get thrown into jail. I actually thought this was a TV movie at first.
The amount of times I said, “Hey, I have that exact jacket,” while watching this is non-negligible. And concerning.
Danny and Whitey should have actually kissed, maybe?
