really putting the special in special effects
A sublimely terrible film; cringetastic writing, ludicrous macho posturing from Michael Jai White and Martin Sheen, multiple fart jokes, and some of the dirt worst special effects that have ever appeared in a film released by a major Hollywood studio. The only way this could be more camp is if a bunch of kids spent the summer taking archery and lanyard classes in it.

Over 2 decades of superhero movies and none of them has even come close to this one for me. It truly, deeply breaks my heart that people will let some poorly aged CGI and occasional scatalogical humor (which, if anything, make the trippy, nightmare reality of the film feel that much more authentic) cause them to completely write off a really well made film full of emotional power and, dare I say it, high artistry otherwise absent from the genre.

So the way to view the movie, I think, is to consider the story as the frame--necessary, but upstaged by what it contains, which in this case is some of the most impressive effects I've seen. The disciplines blend into one another: Animation, makeup, costuming, process shots, morphing. They create a place and a look as specific as the places evoked in such films as "Metropolis" and "Blade Runner". As a visual experience, "Spawn'' is unforgettable.
