The poster made me more curious, then here we are today!
Well, since I watched yesterday the new animated Super Mario Brothers movie and one month ago the old 1993 piece about these plumbers, I had to check this anime too.
This is considered as the first movie based on a video game. It was released the same day than Running Boy: Star Soldier’s Secret (which one turned out to be a disaster), both involve the environment of each game.
Mario doesn’t need to be on steroids to get the attention of Peach here, seems like 37 years later the princess got more rude, she aged badly.
I liked the part where they looked directly at the screen and said "Wow this Mario Ramen sure is good folks"
ka-ching
You can tell this is from that era when Nintendo didn't really have strict rules when it came to their IPs because there's a recurring song that goes "gonna bust you with my love", and that's just one of many things.
Rather surreal hearing Mario say the term "triforce" more than once.
Very middle of the road anime film, but as the first of its kind, makes for a nice novelty. The voice acting can switch back and forth from being goofy to annoying, unfortunately often being more of the latter than the former throughout the feature. I admire it for its soft around the edges, enjoyable character designs. The weird colors Luigi has for his overalls are neat, I like the little blue dog, and Bowser's lackeys like the Koopas and the Goombas are just adorable. This is apparently the first time Luigi was ever portrayed as taller, skinnier, just as a whole noticeably different from Mario, and I think…
We're just a few weeks away from the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, so of course it's time to watch the other Mario movie. You know, the weird one? No, the other weird one.
This first Mario movie isn't celebrated; and for decades its mere existence was a "Did you know?"-style fact. But now it's extremely available thanks to a 4K restoration (using likely the only remaining print) from the kind maniacs at Kineko Video.
And? As a cheap movie made to cash in on what was likely viewed as a fad that certainly wouldn't be remembered 37 years later? Honestly, they did the best they could. The 1993 movie really doesn't have that excuse because so much…
"Male twins shall journey from the kingdom of the east, donning sailor caps and overalls, knobby noses, goggling eyes, and cute little mustaches. Kindhearted, but also money-seeking."
This sure was a Super Mario Bros Super Movie.
