Max Washington has just been released from prison after serving time for burglary. He returns to his old hangout, a hoofer club. His old girl friend, Amy, who still works at the club as a Tap instructor, is less than thrilled to see him. Her father, Little Mo, is happy to see him, because he has plans for a show involving Max. In addition, Max's old partners in crime have another job for him.

Tap must have been a dream project for Gregory Hines, who was well-known for his tap dancing abilities. He gets to stomp and tap his way across the screen in this admirably, all while sharing the screen with some famous fellow tappers, including Sammy Davis Jr., in his final big screen appearance.
The plot is a little hokey and reminiscent of so many other similar movies, but the tap scenes are why you're watching, and man, they are impressive.
Tap is a fascinating movie to me simply that it exists, and this functions as so much of a love letter of sorts to tap dancing, from the commentary of Broadway shows not properly representing it, to the way this is about Max Washington (Gregory Hines) having his enjoyment of tap dancing reinvigorated, to how much this calls back to a bit of a golden era for tap including by casting some amazing tap dancers like Harold Nicholas of the Nicholas brothers.

Staccato, percussive, like the sound of paper ripping, but filtered through an amplifier and possibly made of lightning, the sound of tapping feet hitting the ground like a spray of bullets seems impossible, as if the feet can't possibly move that fast, as if what you are seeing is a lie. At the feelgood finale, Hines is standing against a soft light. The camera is low, there's a patch of chessboard flooring before him, illuminated. A crowd is gathered around as he moves. Just moves. Bumped it up from a 7 to an 8 because my girlfriend loves tap dancing and used to do tap for a long time so she gave some great commentary.
Honestly this movie is pretty dumb but also so fun! The tap dancing scenes are incredible. Really dug this movie.

One of those movies I always wanted to see after seeing Gregory Hines in the fantastic 'Running Scared' with Billy Crystal.
He was a great dancer at the time and must be so proud to have danced with the awesome Sammy Davis JR.
In fact that is the best scene to fast forward too watching a dance off between the two greats relating to tap dancing.
It's a shame because I thought this would be a great dance off movie but it felt like it wasn't getting anywhere at all.

What a treat! Every era should have a tap star and movie. Gregory Hines was so cool, I wish we had him around even longer. But the fact that he got to make a proper dance movie in the 80s with a bit of help from Sammy Davis Jr is a fantastic feat. It might not land as well for those not already crazy about dance movies but this is good, we get even Hines dancing in jail and on the street as well as throwing punches and doing a song.
