So here’s something utterly fascinating… Right in the middle of the war Goebbels commissioned a big budget staging of the Titanic with the intent of showing the superiority of German filmmaking.
This fictionalized account also provided the perfect opportunity to slather on the propaganda by pretending what actually led to the wreck was simply capitalistic greed. And how the only one trying to prevent the accident was a single fictional German officer who consistently demonstrated his superior bravery and selflessness compared to that of the panicking British officers.

I have had NAZI TITANIC on my Kanopy watchlist for about a year now. I never watched it because I only get five Kanopy credits a month and you don’t have to look too hard to find five more appealing films. Once again, FSDO pushed me to do what I should have done long ago – just spend the damn credit. This challenge is a blast. I genuinely look forward to it every week. Zweifellos eine für die damalige Zeit gigantische Produktion, die definitiv auch eine große Inspirationsquelle für James Cameron gewesen sein dürfte, denn vieles aus seinem Titanic findet man schon hier, wie etwa die romantische Komponente oder die Tricktechnik (ein 6 Meter langes Modell wurde hier genutzt) und in der Tat erschuf Herbert Selpin mitunter beeindruckende Bilder, aber gleichzeitig ist dies vor allem ein filmisches Eigentor der Nazis.
Als antibritischer Propagandafilm konzipiert, der sich historische Tatsachen zurechtschreibt, unter anderem ist hier als Held der Geschichte ein deutscher Offizier an Bord, während die reichen und einflussreichen Briten alle korrupt oder verkommen sind, wurde der Film dann doch eher zum Sinnbild des damals nahenden Untergangs des dritten Reiches.
Er wurde in Deutschland nicht im Kino gezeigt.

When doing research for Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Veronika Voss, I stumbled upon the life story of doomed UFA actress Sybille Schmitz, and the seemingly bizarre fact that Joseph Goebbels commissioned a propaganda film revolving around the sinking of the Titanic. Nazi Germany's Titanic marks the sixth film made about the disaster, and I believe it's the only one to go the extra mile and feature a heroic German first officer (Hans Nielsen), as well as an equally heroic ex-Russian countess (Schmitz). Oh, yeah, I think this might also be the first film where the producer had the director murdered during production. Maybe?

This was the week I was dreading. I’ve made a deliberate point to not watch any films made by Nazis. I don’t really want to watch propaganda put out by one of the most evil regimes in history, especially considering that their propaganda was often used to justify not only their war and imperialism, but their xenophobia and the holocaust. In recent years, I’ve become even less patient with calling something like Triumph of the Will one of the best films ever made now that we have literal fucking Nazis trying to gain a foothold in America. This is an interesting retelling of the story of the Titanic made in Nazi Germany in the midst of World War II. The movie places the blame for the tragedy on English stock trading and greed, and it casts a sympathetic eye on the ship's crew, especially the hero who just happens to be a German. The first part of the movie is a bit of a melodramatic slog, with characters scheming about how to enrich themselves. Once tragedy strikes, there is some good effects work showing the sinking ship.
Interestingly, the film's director died under mysterious circumstances in a Nazi prison during the film's production. Once completed, the film was shown throughout Nazi-occupied Europe, but it was never released in Germany itself — the exact reason remains unclear but it's generally thought the movie's dour tone was too depressing for the wartime population of the Third Reich.
