my boy Colin was insanely good in this but a weak screenplay and terribly managed pace neutered what could have been a really hard-hitting film. alas.
Shoot to feel.
A decent drama that felt a little too slow for my taste, but at least performances were solid enough for this to still get a positive review. The context of war is apparent not only in the story, but for the protagonist's battle against himself as well. Mark is not very likeable, he's written to be very walled up and defensive, and mostly engages in confrontational dialogue. It's a quiet movie, but has some thrilling moments in the plotlines, doesn't steer into any amazing left turns, but is at least committed on keeping the events grounded. The visuals aren't the most distinct for its genre, but very convincing with the locations, and showcases some neat landscape shots.…
A lot of this film’s posters, the one on my dvd case especially, make this film look like an action film and it is a shame that it was marketed like that because it isn’t like that at all. It is a fucking tragic drama and Colin Farrell’s performance is heart-wrenching.
The film has some issues with pacing and beyond a few harrowing moments it isn’t too special, but it does eventually build up to an emotional gut-punch of a climax that makes it worth your while. 4 stars may be generous but ultimately there’s nothing really wrong with it.
Also: Colin Farrell puts his long hair up in a ponytail at one point 👌🏼
"Enough, I want to go home"
One of Colin's best performances in his career imo. What I love about this film is it shows the cruelty of war not through the eyes of a soldier on the field as often seen but through the eyes of a non-combatant. I'm glad this film is not too focus on explosions and gun sounds in war, but on the suffering of a man who witnessed something beyond his apprehension. It's been a day and Colin's performance in the final scene still haunts me
There could have been an interesting little mystery here if it had been in the hands of a better director. One who could have eked better performances out of Paz Vega and a not-so-good-in-the-noughties Farrell, and transitioned between acts, timelines, even scenes better, and strived for a better score and visuals.
As it is, the final article is uninteresting and abrupt. The only saving grace is that it's 90 mins long, so bearable mediocrity.
And on the plus side, I've completed the Long Haired Farrell Trilogy (alongside Ondine and Crazy Heart)
yall know me too well damn enough to know that i am simply not capable of rating any movie that has Colin Farrell in it low, that will just never happen
I think the script and the pacing really fail what could be a really powerful and tragic movie. A lot of the performances shine through though. If they'd just gotten to Lee and Farrell sooner...
Right away, three stars for Colin’s ponytail. And the fact that it’s an 80s movie.
I wouldn't let anyone else pick skulls out for me
Apart from surviving employment with Cal South for a decade, I cannot speak with surety about post-traumatic stress disorder. And while I just made a joke involving it (but not about it), I don't find PTSD a laughing matter. Far too many people are affected by it, not just those returning from combat situations (PTSD is not exclusive to soldiers), but also their families, friends, co-workers, neighbors... anyone who knows someone that has it can also suffer the repercussions of the disorder.
To be sure, Triage doesn't play anything for laughs. It may be one of the more dour films I have seen in recent years, making Melancholia seem like a joyride. (Well, for me, Melancholia was a joyride, my…
