  About ten years ago I wrote a song called "Oprichnina" for the second album of my thrash metal band. It was the culmination of a specific historic interest regarding Ivan the Terrible. I found this Pavel Lungin movie at a close down sale in central Stockholm and I had no idea of its existence prior to that. You can guess how thrilled I was when I realised the movie is about the power struggle that Ivan the IV had with the church in general and the Oprichnina in specific.

  The movie delivers the standard bombastic framework most Russian movies does when they're about its own country's history. Everything down to the last detail is historically correct and sets an atmosphere…

  تصاویر شبیه فیلم های پاراجانف به شدت چشم نواز بودن. پرداخت نماها عالی بود طوری که همین پرداخت گاهی به فیلم ریتم فوق العاده ای می داد ولی فیلمنامه در مقابل این ریتم رو خیلی جاها مشوش می کرد. یه جاهایی خوب بود و یه جاهایی اطناب داشت. جز این روند فیلمنامه هم گاهی به کلیشه کشیده می شد. البته یه قسمت هایی مثل خشم تزار فیلمنامه خوبی هم داشت ولی کمی جلوتر باز دچار ضعف میشد.
  در کل میشه گفت به خاطر تکنیک های کارگردانی و صحنه پردازی ارزش دیدن رو داره واقعاً و می تونست خیلی فوق العاده تر باشه اما نشد.

  Мне все ещё не кажется, что в фильме действительно есть аллегория путинизма (как было в версии Эйзенштейна со Сталиным) — но сцена с увеселительными пытошными какая-то очень точная и современная. И из 2021 года фильм смотрится хоть и напыщенно-исторично, но все же про нас — молчу о том, что в 2009 году он выходил как будто в другой стране.

  absolutely fucking buckwild film. more of a horror movie than a historical drama and you know what? i'm way into that shit. i'd put off watching it in my series of ivan the terrible films because i expected there to be a lot of sexual violence, but it turned out to be all violence and no sex. none. like, the sex drive is completely sublimated into death drive, it's 100 % agony no ecstasy for anyone (except the viewer assuming they are into graphic, horrifying spectacles of physical torture). i really respect that, honestly. by the way, have you read "male fantasies" by klaus theweleit?

  Дуэт Мамонова - Янковского шикарен, да и Охлобыстин отжег (невольно в голове возникает референсы, сами знаете какие). Но к исторической достоверности есть вопросы и эта работа как по мне слабее острова.
