Although Virginia has a ton of problems and is very messy, there are some good moments throughout bolstered by some great work by Jennifer Connelly. She plays a single mother who has a long term affair with the Sheriff of their small town, complete with BDSM and talk of abortion. Her history of mental illness makes her the object of pity and scorn. Things get even worse for her after the sheriff attempts to have a political career and hide his history with Virginia. It's all just a big mess of ideas, condemnations, and bitterness that never comes together in a satisfying way.

This was an interesting one. It takes about a half hour to really get going, but it touches at some great stuff before going off in some really bizarre directions. I’m not even completely sure what to make of this. The dialogue isn’t always believable, and it relies on coincidences at times, but the strong cast really propels it. The storyline is intriguing, if a little far-fetched. The strength of the movie is definitely the character of Virginia, as it deals with her mental illness, her secret relationship with the sheriff, and her relationship with her son. And of course Jennifer Connelly gives a fantastic performance.

This story of a kid trying to deal with his mentally ill mother (Jennifer Connelly) while aspiring to make a wife of his long-time friend (Emma Roberts), whose dad also happens to be his mother's lover, has the potential for dark acidic comedy, but director Dustin Lance Black fumbles into dreary, overlong territory. Connelly commits to her role, but it's a wasted effort. The rest of the cast is good, too - it's just the material that isn't.
Jennifer Connelly is one of my favorite actresses, that's all.
It's like Dustin Lance Black took every idea he ever had and tried to stick it into one movie. Virginia isn't entirely unlikeable though. There's a certain kind of charm about it, but not enough to make up for the lackluster effort put into it.

The December Challenge 2 - Film #47
It certainly isn't the neatness and most together drama I've ever seen, but the film has spunk and an energy rarely seen from such a dry subject. It is essentially a coming of age story about a boy whose mother is crazy and how her interactions with the world shape his perspective on life and love. It isn't the deepest well, it is only skin deep in my honest opinion, but the cast make the most of the borderline black comedy script and Connelly and Harris have great presence (which is always the case IMO).
So I ended up deep deep in the bottom of Emma Roberts library and I was like is that Jennifer Connelly? And Ed Harris? Why have I never heard of this before?
Well the good thing is the performances were all great especially Jennifer Connelly who went all out she was absolutely great. Overall though it's a slow movie I was never that invested in it but I didn't hate it either. The problem is it's just messy and inconsistent, if it weren't for the strong cast I would have completely zoned out and even still I'll probably remember it as the movie with Jennifer Connelly,Ed Harris,Emma Roberts, and friends

I should've liked this a lot more than I did. Felt like it lacked a cohesive thesis and left some interesting threads unexplored but it wasn't a total wash.
That said anything with Jennifer Connelly gets bumped an extra star and I'll watch her in anything.
This was the first Jennifer Connelly movie I quit halfway cause it was just plain terrible.

First of all I was either tried at night reading the description but I swear it was about a fairy (Jennifer Connelly) in a small town who befriends a sherif.
No I was completely wrong.
Second I thought Peter Weller was in the movie but something seemed off.
It was Wal Mart brand Robocop Ed Harris instead 😭
Then the side plot with Emma Roberts character and her boyfriend make Anakin and Padmes romantic relationship look like Citizen Kane type of writing.
I also don’t stan Emma Roberts.
Jennifer Connelly’s performance was really something. If I had to rate her performance specifically I’d give it a 5/5. The movie, not so much. The plot was a bit wacky and the BDSM was random to me
