Starring: King Kong Ain’t Got Sh!t On Denzel
A new month marks a fresh journey in a new talent's filmography. This time around, I thought it would be fun to explore the films of a famed actor, both inside and outside of his own community. He's the kind of actor that, when he appears in a film, draws your attention no matter how good the picture is. The man, the icon Denzel Washington.
As is the case with even the greatest actors, we begin with a film in which his role is almost nonexistent, but this is to be anticipated from a film that has little to do with his character and, while on screen, nevertheless manages to stand out…

The life story of Wilma who won the Olympics in 1960 is a beautiful story taken be the truth.
I'm here to watch yong denzel 🖤
“I never wanted nothin’ else.”
For all the fellow Denzel super fans out there, Wilma’s actually kinda good.

Last year, I had an unsuccessful attempt to travel through a single actors entire filmography, but that was on me for picking Imogen Poots. Don't get me wrong, I still love her more than myself, but goddamn once I rewatched the handful that I already knew I liked, it was either hard to find a good one that she's in or just hard to find them period. And she's good in everything, but not everything she's in is good.
So for this year, I went with someone who I admire and love to watch, and predict that I'll be able to find and enjoy nearly everything he's credited in. Welcome to Denzel Watch-ington!
Already, it seems his second credit, a…
“Wilma, he cried over you all the time. Cause from the first he knew you were something special.”
You could very much tell this was a TV movie. Denzel did good in his first role ever though. Overall though, I did not like this movie, but that’s not saying much because I don’t usually like sports movies.
even for a tv movie this shit is bad.
shout out to seth rogoff for forcing me to watch this!
Wilma Rudolph's story is so spectacular that they actually had to downplay it some for this TV biopic.
The only narrative film from Bud Greenspan, the king of the Olympic doc.
Denzel's debut.
A well acted film on a subject I knew nothing about. Worth a watch to see the acting debut of Denzel Washington.
Just a bore fest sadly. I watched this on my quest to watch every Denzel feature film and this tv movie just does not do any justice to Wilma Rudolph who was before my time so I did not know much about her.
It just is so slow paced and I understand it's a tv movie and doesn't have a budget, but the story is just told at a snails pace and it was really hard to stay engaged.
Don't watch this unless you're on a mission like I'm on, it's just not really worth your time at all.
One of only two narrative features directed by Bud Greenspan, and based on Wilma, I'm so glad he found his true calling with the documentary form. Wilma is a dreadfully realized and dramatically inert tale of track and field Olympic gold and bronze medal winner Wilma Rudolph's heartbreaking struggle to overcome her father's antiquated notion of gender roles. Skipping through time and glossing over her accomplishments, Greenspan stages a protracted scene involving Wilma's coach coming to have a heart to heart with her father, to head-scratching effect. Granted this was a 1977 MOTW, but Greenspan ultimately displayed more compassion, flare for dramatics, narrative enthusiasm, and understanding of character, in the fifteen minute capsules he directed for his Olympic documentaries than this entire feature.
