halfway through this a cockroach flew directly into my computer screen and it was scarier than anything that happened in the movie. im never leaving my window open again fuck you bugs
*brad pitt voice* WHAT'S IN THE BOX
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i posted this as a comment first but im putting it in the actual post now dont read it twice!!:
i don't want to be hypercritical of this b/c i think most of its failings come from the fact that it's an anthology film and theyre just inherently constraining imo but i'm sure a lot of women who aren't normally into horror will really like this. i feel like most new woman-directed horror films get trapped in this weird realm where there's crossover appeal because women cinephiles or even casual film fans r so hungry for films directed by women, and somewhere in the production stage for new movies i think that's something they take into consideration. i don't…
annie clark could literally do or create ANYTHING and i wouldn't be surprised at all. if it was announced tomorrow that she was joining a space mission i'd be like "makes sense"
I wanted every single dinner that family had.
Yes, men and women can both make mediocre films.

Female 4 Front: Action! - Kusama, The Complex Destroyer
REVIEW FOR ONLY LIVING SON
Nice little, short film. Probably because I watched this after Jennifer’s Body I got the impression this could work as a great short to watch either before or after that film, as it shares some small similarities. It almost reinforces this idea that Karyn is great working on the horror and thriller genre, which I guess she also thinks the same as she’s been doing a lot of this before and after this. The makeup work is solid and so were the performances.

Wait, I thought Vin Diesel was in this??
women kinda took an L with this
All four segments in "XX" feels incomplete, especially the first one that has an interesting idea, but doesn't care to make sense at the end.
The second one has a huge tone confusion. It's not funny or horrifying. The third one is okay for an amateur. It has some good takes and a bloody fun attack sequence.
The last one has the best premise (Rosemary's Baby 2), some clever little ideas (like the egg scene) and a good performance by Christina Kirk, but the ending is a mess!
The only reason that "XX" is getting so much praise is because it's done by four female directors like some kind of feminist event. Nothing against the idea, but good intentions are no guarantee of a good product/work.
2.5/10 - ROTTEN
Anthology horror - 4 short films:
“The Box” (written and directed by Jovanka Vuckovic)
“The Birthday Party” (written by Roxanne Benjamin & Annie Clark (St Vincent), directed by Annie Clark)
“Don’t Fall” (written and directed by Roxanne Benjamin)
“Her Only Living Son” (written and directed by Karyn Kusama)
+ the reason why I rewatched this: the intro, film segues, & finale created by stop motion genius Sofia Carrillo.
My favorite of the short films was “Don’t Fall”, followed closely by “The Birthday Party” (Melanie Lynskey shines in her role of Mary).
Three of the stories are about motherhood, so the film may not be relatable to all (although I have no evil spawn of my own & found this quite relatable).
The plots of the first & last films were heartfelt-ly saddening to me, the 2nd funny, & the 3rd I wanted more from - it could easily be turned into a full length feature. The entirety of all of it was very satisfying!🖤
