I was not prepared for the long runtime of this going in. Nor did I really have any idea what this movie was about. Having only seen still images from the first hour or so of the film which absolutely does it no justice as it turns into a completely different movie afterwards. But damn if I’m not happy I was so blind because this was such a treat. Between this Oldboy, Parasite, The Wailing, etc. Asian films are just…

It’s like some old pervert recorded over a VHS tape of the actual Bigfoot vs. D.B. Cooper movie with footage that they got while stalking the next door frat bros. We were promised an epic battle between two legends and what we got was an insult to gay pornos. If for whatever reason you went into this expecting homoeroticism you’d still be disappointed. This is too great of a premise to go unfulfilled, I demand a remake that actually delivers on the promise of the title. This is just not quite gay porn disguised as a legitimately fun schlocky b-movie and it genuinely pisses me off.

This is a fun little thriller with a few narrative issues (especially the Mission Impossible-esque flashbacks of recontextualizing exposition) but enough showmanship to make up for it. It also serves as a nice intro to religious deconstruction that raises many great points more people should honestly consider without diving too deep to blow the narrative off the rails. Hugh Grant is entertaining and compelling as fuck and the two female leads were also incredibly good here. They played their characters…

The most confusing part of this movie is why Bong Joon-ho decided to make it such trash.

Which raises more questions, like why did this movie forget what it was about multiple times just to completely abandon its premise with an hour left to go. Why did it spend its entire last hour on a basic ass overdone sci-fi cliche instead of any of the multiple different things it got sidetracked with before that were all far more interesting. Even…

Elements of this felt ripped out of a stupid Seth Rogan comedy while other elements felt ripped out of a Wong Kar-wai romance. Yet somehow the two very different approaches to filmmaking not only balance well in this movie but the silly immature humor actually elevates and contributes to the heavy emotional moments. I’m reminded of Being John Malkovich, though this film has a much less subtle sense of humor and absurdity, both movies are able to strike deep psychological…
