Bong Joon Ho's scathing social-commentary reaches a delirious, murderous pitch in this sci-fi amalgamation of his previous work. The narrative scope wavers and is a bit too broad for the audience, but there is a vitality, that even when inflated to cartoon-ish proportions, remains undeniable, perhaps in that the wild, fantastical elements are less for escapism, but rather deeply rooted in the mania of the contemporary moment. Robert Pattinson's studious preparation is fully liberated into two different spines by Mr. Ho's inclination for big performances (particularly when directing English speakers), who cannot be accused of having his cast be dull through underacting.

Howl's Moving Castle 2004
A gorgeous, serene, animated film by Hayao Miyazaki and studio Ghibli, adapted from Diana Wynne Jones' fantasy novel, told with Miyazaki's typically high level of storytelling skill. The constellation of Miyazaki themes are present, with a new foray into aging and body image. Ultimately a very peaceful experience, despite the sparkling visual excitement and rich color density. With an excellent dub by the whole cast, Christian Bale bringing a nice range to Howl's character.

1917 2019
1917 is tricked out to look like one continuous shot, that tracks the world-weary protagonist across the artillery puckered landscape of World War I, who is doing his best to drag himself to the end of the runtime. A grim and impressive technical exercise, commemorating the tragic loss of life, which is sort of exhausting to watch, but maybe that's the point.
