Miracle Mile 1988
Hadn't seen this since '88, when I was (unfortunately) living in Los Angeles. Any film where L.A. is fucked is fine by me, and I remember being blown away at the time.
But now, decades later, though I still love the simplicity of the setup, and the suspense is quite good, I just can't get past the acting of the supporting cast, which is just atrocious.

The Substance 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Was tempted to walk out after the opening scene -- Demi's walk of fame star becoming cracked and neglected. I thought -- no, the film can't be this obvious all the way through. How wrong I was. That scene was peak subtlety compared to the rest of the film.
How can a film this stupid pick up a Best Screenplay award? At Cannes no less?
Oh - one more thing -- the scene in the diner -- never have I seen greater contempt for the audience. Coralie Fargeat truly must think we're a buch of fucking idiots.

The Batman 2022
I don't mind at all the film is dark -- both aesthetically and narratively -- but my god -- couldn't the screenwriter offer ANYTHING other than purely expository dialog? It was insufferable. People just explaining (and over-explaining) everybody's backstory, history, and present-day situations. Every bit of text is read out loud, followed by the same set of questions.
This is an assault on screenwriting.
