Can I Get a Witness? 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
In the opening moments, you might think it's a gentle coming of age romance set in an idyllic hippie community, but darkness reveals itself... an exploration of the consequences of the climate crisis, and possible solutions, both good and horrifying. Lovely gardens, everyone on bicycles, and... mandatory suicide. Woven throughout is the image of the foxglove - a pretty flower which can provide both lifesaving medication (as taken by Daniel, born with a heart defect in the beforetimes when multiple surgeries were still permitted) and life-ending poison - a reminder of the double-edged swords hiding in plain sight around us.
Bleak or hopeful? Why not both?

Loved this so much. A love letter to beige, Winnipeg, the perils of going home, the somberness of children. So many great moments and an absolutely fantastic aesthetic. Canadiana at its best.
