Four favorites are the best things I’ve watched recently
Incredible in a theater. Much funnier than I remembered, reinforced by the crowd. No one has ever commanded the screen like this. I forget to look at legitimately anyone else but DDL. I kinda let this slip within my favorites over the years. This rewatch was a much-needed refresher that this is an unbelievable achievement in direction and performance and as rich as a text can get. Has you in a vice grip from first frame to last and deserves a high spot in my personal pantheon without question.
Given that this is at least the fifth Dracula adaptation I’ve seen, I’m starting to realize I just don’t go crazy for this story or character. Both are iconic, sure, but I often find my interest dipping. If there’s anything holding this back, it’s that.
Meanwhile, there’s a lot to love. The sprawling vistas and impressive locations (Herzog sure has a knack for this). Kinski’s unsettling yet often pitiful portrayal of the Count. Lucy’s newfound agency. The mystifying mood with surrealist touches. Herzog paints a portrait of obsession and desire leading to ruin. Sound familiar? I liked it!
Minnie opening a box of chocolates and finding a dog bone and then just losing it and saying she hates all men is why I continue to watch these.
Sometimes they’re just nuts.
I would drop my favorite quote here but Letterboxd won’t let me post the full screenplay. Extended analysis coming soon. This movie is perfect.
