Where did that black kid come from or go and how did he get in there?
Every time I start a James Mangold film I think, wow this is good, I wonder how he will let us down in the third act, and he never disappoints.
Here a career woman turns down her independence to go back in time for a man. A totally valid outcome that nonetheless isn't supported by the screenplay's first two acts. The only thing that backs up this outcome is Leopold telling her she's unhappy.

Moana 2 2024
Sets a record for disengagement during watch alongside my nephew. I have never paid less attention to a movie I've gotten all the way through than this one whose plot doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Fine but instantly forgettable songs. Unmemorable villain. I wasn't clear on what Moana really wanted aside from seeing her initials carved on a rock, the flimsiest plot device since the Sith Wayfinder in The Rise of Skywalker.

This is a movie Scorsese holds in high regard. He grew up at the right time for it to capture his imagination. 13. When I was 13 I saw the remake of When A Stranger Calls. It's not a great film but a seminal thriller for me and one of the first films I saw on my own. I suspect that was that for him, and Stranger Calls was what it was for me.
