It’s obvious the filmmaker is heavily informed by ari aster, and yet, somehow a movie that should be exhaustingly grim like hereditary still feels funnier and more satisfying than the smile films. This is nihilistic horror. I think my appreciation for horror is the catharsis of someone winning in the end. We’re just left with nothing in both these movies. Hereditary and midsommar are shamlessly copied throughout. But i have to admit that the smile monster maintains to be quite a nifty practical creature!
