  Rating subject to change, although I generally don't love Kaufman's work, I really want to adore this movie. The performances are really impressive, and the visuals are masterfully done. But like Synecdoche, I find Kaufman's storytelling obtuse and esoteric (for what seems like the sake of being obtuse and esoteric). Deserves a rewatch, but I find it hard for me to be excited about delving back in.

  i feel like this is the first Eggers movie that is inconsistent across the board. where the cinematography is usually great and great throughout, there were some questionable pans, woeful CGI backdrops, and strange edits amidst the otherwise clinical camerawork we’ve come to expect. the acting, particularly Lily Rose-Depp, is mostly really captivating, but is marred by occasional clunky and melodramatic delivery. Eggers usually nails dialogue, but in this case it was missing a sort of joie de vivre present…
