Some of the best scenes I’ve seen in a cinema in recent memory. The whole sequence at the quarry was a feast to look at and take in, some more character-driven stuff was amazing too, especially in the first half. Both Adrian Brody and Felicity Jones give amazing performances, but Guy Pearce is a clear standout. It never drags, aside from the epilogue I wouldn’t cut a second. The editing is smart.

This film starts in the right place, showing the nuances of child abuse and how it isn’t as black + white as is often shown in cinema; it’s a mother trying her best in the only way she knows how but her own shortcomings make for an abusive and lonely childhood for Maria, and we see everything from her perspective.
The film also ends in the right place, with Maria learning how to carry grief with her instead of ignoring…
