I don’t know what I expected, but definitely not this.
So much parody, political and environmental satire, and creative juice packed into one movie. I could argue that there are some unnecessary scenes here and there, and the dialogue is explanatory and not very subtext-rich, but honestly, it feels like that also fits right into this beautiful mess of a story. It didn’t strike me as much as I had hoped.
It’s definitely a great movie, and considering the time it came out, I’m sure it was groundbreaking, especially as a directorial debut. But I can’t unsee all the pieces of media that were inspired by it, which I think is part of why the concept didn’t feel as engaging to me as it could have.
Nevertheless, it’s a classic. Go watch it.
