The Boy and the Heron 2023
The way Miyazaki externalizes his preoccupation with the legacy he’s soon to leave behind might leave even the most adept cinephile befuddled at his explorarion of gnostic & metaphysical concepts, in a movie where the archetypal artist (a creator of worlds) becomes the demiurge itself.
But ultimately, The Boy and the Heron is an oneiric film about Miyazaki preparing for his death, while trying to accept the life and art he’s created. Visually it’s pretty consistent with his style, and thematically I argue it seems more like a Jodorowsky invention. Rich to analyze and a visual feast to devour.
