Aliens 1986
A classic sci-fi film which maintains a constant state of dread, tension and heart-racing action, setting its claws in early on and never really letting go. A prime example of really putting the characters through it, experiencing the gamut of intense emotions from fear, horror, despair, rage and terror, making you feel their physical and mental agony throughout and not giving them (or us) any real relief.

The Pledge 2001
A very understated film that quietly grips in every way, from the acting, to the direction and the score. Even Nicholson (as Jerry) is reined in. His seen-it-all demeanour and weary features etched by a lifetime of police-work tell us more about the character than the plot and dialogue decide to reveal.
