My favorite Godzilla movie to date. I appreciate that this Godzilla can take damage. Too many of the other ones make Godzilla entirely indestructible which, for me, takes away from the suspense to a degree. With this take on Godzilla, it still feels like an impossible force but with a sliver of hope.
The heat ray attack is done to perfection. The build up mechanism helps the wind up time feel less arbitrary and creates a massive payoff.
The story…
Great humor and feels like an indie movie at times. I think your enjoyment largely depends on your mood/energy levels going in. For me, the humor got a bit repetitive by the end.
Joaquin’s performance of Napoleon was certainly fun to watch but the focus of his military and romantic life left me wanting more. Vanessa Kirby plays Josephine perfectly and I felt every emotional tug of her broken relationship with Napoleon.
The movie is a tad gray and dull but that didn’t necessarily bug me when watching it. I do feel like that might be more unappealing on a second viewing.
I am very interested to see the directors cut if one ever comes out.
