Really violent and nasty, for better or worse. Same grossness as Bone Tomahawk. This director is really good at portraying violence as extremly gnarly yet also somehow weirdly fake? Lots of head crushing.
The epitome of 80's right wing war-on-crime action. Los Angeles is a festering pit of lawlessness and at the heart of it is some kind of death cult whose motivations are nebulous but seem dedicated to evil for evil's sake. Fortunately Stallone is on the scene as renegade cop Cobra, a cop so cool he wears aviators and leather gloves and keeps a match hanging out his mouth and has a cobra engraved on his gun handle, which juts Freudianly…
Honestly not very interesting, aside from the fact that as always Fincher directs a watchable film and Fassbender turns in a reliably compelling performance. Product placement runs abound, amongst a story that pushes you away from the boring-ass subject for most of the runtime.
Surreal, upsetting, and immensely improved by the experience of going in blind (ha) & most importantly experiencing this live in a movie theater (one that nearly shares the name of the theater in this film, no less). Not recommended for anyone grossed out by eye stuff!
