What an interesting film! The acting of Celia Johnson is especially good. She has such an interesting face. She’s not a classic beauty in any way but is perfect for this film. She and Trevor Howard proceed, over about 4 weeks time to have what is mostly shown to be an emotional affair. The story is effectively told by Celia’s character, Laura. Great film. Hitchcock’s cinematography is exceptional, as it usually is. His ability to use shadows and angles in black and white is brilliant. Laurence Olivier is good. Joan Fontaine is very good, maybe even excellent. Unfortunately she plays a character who is insecure with zero self esteem that it drives me to distraction. There was absolutely a class system in England. She clearly knows that she doesn’t “belong” according to many, but I wish she would accept the fact that she does belong sooner. Still, the suspense is there and Judith Anderson is fantastic as Mrs. Danvers.

This is a fascinating movie. In the beginning it captures the respect that the public generally had for the news media. It then, in a way that is almost prophetic, captures the shift we see today of most mainstream news outlets into entertainment, into valuing ratings over accuracy, balance, and fairness.
