This is one of those films that looks so darn good that it makes me rethink how I want to draw and and illustrate. It last happened with ‘The Red Turtle’, but it seems Netflix has got more sophisticated since then so I’ve now got a photo reel full of black images rather than screenshots.

Unlike The Red Turtle though, I found the story totally gripping- a journey through pride, guilt, grief, solitude, and obsession. Climbers are mad. Wish I’d been able to see it in the cinema, I might get the projector out some time to watch again.

Excellently crafted, great unobtrusive use of new tech in the narrative, lots of creative editing and camera stuff. I just didn’t quite connect to it emotionally or get all that drawn in - but I’m sure that was my fault (looking after a sick baby late at night while trying to read subtitles isn’t the most immersive combination!) so I’ll need to watch it again with less distractions to appreciate it more.

This was the artiest of art house films that I’ve seen in a very long time, and I’m sure that I missed 90% of the meaning behind things, but still enjoyed it a lot. Extremely beautiful cinematic moments. I kind of missed having Kitano winking at me the whole time on screen, but you can still see his direction in all the shots. What a mysterious dude.…

How strange that a film can be so simple and unstructured, foreign and remote, but still it resonates deeply and feels so timeless. It doesn't have any point to make for me- it's not taught me anything or provoked me to think about anything in particular- but it's still completely engrossing and enjoyable. I'll keep coming back.

Noticed this time - just how great the Dad is. Even when in the stress of moving house he's engaging and playful with…
