A marvelously effective little gem shot on the proverbial shoestring budget. Genuinely weird and enchanted-feeling.
This plays out like the popularized version of a Modernist novel: one day in the East End, featuring a sizable network of plots and protagonists, heavily focused on everyday, working-class realism. The constant rush of new characters and newly revealed connections between plots can be quite overwhelming, but feels methodical and precise at the same time. Gorgeously shot by Douglas Slocombe. The final set piece is absolutely astonishing. Pity about the hints of antisemitism throughout.
What a role for Boris. Just exquisite writing. And generally a film that pushes the boundaries as to how much moral ambivalence Hays Code Hollywood can tolerate. Gorgeously shot, too.
This was lovely. Especially the hotdog fingers.
