    I didn't have high hopes for this. What I'd heard about it sounded peurile, and it is, but it's a huge amount of fun, too. I started laughing about a minute in and didn't stop except during the tedious "love interest" bits, which slowed it down.
    It was made with the smell of an oily dollar note, but the film doesn't stink. The practical effects are particularly gratifying. The editing is good, driving the comedy very effectively in places. All…

    I've seen this film more times than any other. How nerdy of me. It's not the best Kubrick in my estimation, but it's up there. And it still stands up. The special effects are fantastic for the time. I first saw it at a Cinerama cinema and the moment when we fly through the two halves of the orbiting space station is epic. One caveat: don't bother unless you can see it at the movies or on a moderately gigantic television. The first half an hour will be deadly dull on anything smaller than a 40'' telly.

    Chris Guest turns his mischievous attention to the film industry. It's unwatchable in the (English) The Office sort of way: deeply mortifying. Peep-through-your-fingers awful. I loved it. The ultimate mortification is Marilyn Hack's facelift. They must have had so much fun making this movie, I don't know how they managed to get through their takes. It's up there with Best In Show.
