I like that each entry in this trilogy has been done in a different genre. While this didn't work for me as well as Pearl, it's remarkable as an exercise in a rather specific genre during a specific time period, though I wonder if enough of its audience will have seen the 80s exploitation thrillers (of the Angel and Vice Squad variety) this was inspired by to appreciate how effectively it operates and feels like those films.

Tokyo Cabbageman K 1980
Inexplicable body transformation, a universe where seemingly every interaction results in absurd violence, a whole lot of gorgeously blown out handheld running shots set to propulsive songs--really this movie is just here to revel in movement, bodies, and noise and I'm not sure what else you could want out of a punk film.

The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood 1986
From what I read before I watched it, I came in expecting a film informed by 70s sketch comedy sensibilities that might feel like a mixed bag of bits as with other sketch-inspired movies from that era, but this is a surprisingly rich and interesting film, one that works as a sprawling and complicated whole. It's not weird in an incoherent way (it has its own logic), but it is rather unique--I thought it operated more like a comic novel…
