Hugh Grant is a poor man’s Michael Cain and Aubrey Paige is a poor man’s sex symbol. Ok. Watch it with a frozen supermarket pizza.

Margot Robbie is superbly cast in this vacuous bubblegum sweet foray into the perfect world of Barbie Land.  A few laughs and set decoration did not make up for the lack lustre resolution of the feminist agenda.  The snappy final line of the move tells us (destroying the feminist agenda) that all Barbe is good for is getting a d*** in her.  They kicked Stereotypical Barbie to the kerb as some kind of modern lush and missed her real purpose... Which is FRIEND.  The one thing little girls did on their own with Barbie. Missed opportunity for a cheap laugh.

Cillian Murphy is a revelation in this epic biopic and historical record. Robert Downey Jr’s role expands as the movie goes on and his performance achieves a crescendo that is sure to garner him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.  Likewise Emily Blunt’s role crescendos to a gritty and engaging interview with the bad guys.  Visual and audio effects made this an all senses cinema experience. Subject matter and numbers of those who perished was sobering indeed. If this film doesn’t blitz the Oscar’s I’ll be very surprised.

    Now You See Me 2

Big names barely save this disjointed spectacle. Character development is left wanting, relying far too much on the first movie to understand who they are.  Lulu is a dull replacement of Isla Fisher who’s spunk and humour gave life to Henley Reeves in the first movie.  Plot surrounding Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman) and his presence in both movies is weak … and the long game draws barely an ah-ha after we’re released from this cobbled together SFX exercise.
