Watching a movie every day for a year: Day 363

If Bad Boys was the Proterozoic fish of Michael Bay's oeuvre, crawling up on land for the first time, gasping for air, then Bad Boys II is Michael Bay as ape. Upright and conscious. Completely unaware of the problems surrounding ideas like misogyny and racial stereotypes. Yet somehow aware of abject nihilism. That sounds familiar, I'm pretty sure I saw it in like 2001...

    Mostly just daft fun.

I really hope they learn for the next film to not frame and stage the monsters the same way they frame and stage the humans. It makes them feel the same size, the monsters rarely feel big here.

Sort of like the Fast & Furious movies these started (somewhat) grounded and serious and have gotten more and more preposterous. I honestly don't know how you take them back to that but I hope whatever comes next is more like the 2014 film.

Watching a movie every day for a year: Day 291

Most of the time we ask something of a movie. Usually, we ask to be entertained. Sometimes a movie asks something of us though. We're asked to be patient. Be attentive.

It's an enormously sad and bitter film. While it isn't devoid of humour, it's still overwhelmingly about cruelty.

It's a lot, honestly. This needs more than one viewing to take it all in.

But it's undoubtedly, absolutely, fucking tremendous.

(Also Leo should be up for Judge Dredd with that frown.)
