The incomparable John Ford, director of well over 100 feature films, many favorites of mine and many clear masterpieces — created this: one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Shrill, idiotic, static and insulting to the intelligence. Can’t win them all, I guess.  Strangely, this falls between of two brilliant, enduring classics from this master: How Green Was My Valley and The Grapes of Wrath.  A rotting corpse of failed intensions.

Some flourishes of fine cinematography can’t save distilled stupidity and scenery savaging performances.  Think L’il Abner meets The Room.  Ah… the limitations of the auteur theory at its most stark

Not just a great boxing noir, but one of the greatest boxing pictures ever. You can smell the influence on Scorsese's Raging Bull. In fact, Scorsese does commentary on a DVD release, I believe.

Strangely fascinating for being so terrible, but at the same time, so fascinatingly energetic. It's like a diagram for a movie, rather than an actual movie. But I found myself having fun watching it.

Mesmerizing! And way out there! Tarkovsky meets Peckinpah with a splash of Brakhage!
