Damn, this sure is a biopic make by professional filmmakers. Mind-numbingly capable. I felt nothing.

The title credit drop 45 min in is vicious business.

The performances and the cinematography (grainy 16mm long takes) are so strong that I wish I liked this more. I’m all for a slow burn, particularly when sandwiched between acts of brutality and wrapped in thick tension. But the pace and runtime spell indulgence in a way I find disappointing. 
You could shave a full half hour out and leave the father/captor/cult leader just as menacing and the victims’ circumstances equally harrowing. You could still have the lingering images of a perfectly-kept, still house with evil under the surface.
There’s a lot I admire, but let’s keep a tight 90.

Unintentionally hilarious. Perhaps the least believable couple ever filmed.
