this is how cinema looks in my minds eye. at long last, payne proves that the timeless elements of filmmaking we miss and want and need are not only flawlessly achievable, but there is an enthusiastic audience for them.
dissolves, slow zooms, long takes, telescopes, film grain, muted earth tones, dialog that sounds Nagra recorded (!), tasteful title cards with opacity set just right (not a harsh digital layer haphazardly slapped on top vintage filtered footage)…well gosh golly gee whiz…

well it’s the following day and i’m still thinking about this movie. i don’t have a bunch of time for deep thoughts here, but to just scribble out a few things…
the acting is pitch perfect as you might expect, (and isbell actually steals a couple scenes!) bobby showing more depth than he has in quite a while, def more than in irishman. perhaps it’s a better character tho too.
my main quibble is with gladstone, or maybe it’s just…
