The Organizer 1963
There's something uniquely Italian in bitterly smiling in the face of poverty. Monicelli here wholeheartedly grasps all the natural pessimism of Italian neorealism and infuses it with sardonic humour and smirky criticism. The result isn't a drama and isn't the commedia all'italiana Monicelli basically founded, but it's a hybrid of the two, imbued with a gaunt ray of hope, rooted in socialism, as common in postwar European satires.

The Substance 2024
This was so poorly written, photographed, mixed, and directed that it alienated me almost immediately. I started imagining a scathing review 30 minutes in, and then it got even worse, inspiring a sort of incredulous awe at just how bad it could be. It’s comically bad.
It feels like a parody of everything that The Neon Demon (2016) is. And now I’m seeing positive reviews from people I respect, and I’m mindblown. How is it even conceivable to withstand layers…
