An unfortunate adaptation of a very nice story. Apart from Cyrano himself, played by Dinklage, the movie is ruined by his lover Roxanne's not-as-good recitation and by the transposition of the musical into movie: it gives a sense of trying to emulate Les Miserables, but failing. Simple and yet complex aesthetics that perfectly convey the meaning of the movie. Buddhism of the Zen tradition, depicted in its own fashion through architecture, calligraphy, bond with nature and pupil-master relationship. The structure itself is simple in its unraveling and complex in the set of meanings it brings forth. Some hints of magic (miraculous) realism and a little unsettling music. Dramatically fearful and violent in the sense that it displays human fears and violence. This movie cannot leave untouched or without questioning oneself.
