tbh pretty girlypop of me to get my period just as I was about to go see this 💅🏻
every time I saw a rat on screen my heart fluttered, thinking of Willem Dafoe getting to hang out with all his little rodent pals
genuinely one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen, will be thinking about those shots for a long time to come
This feels like the sort of movie men who tout themselves as feminists will try to convince you is deep. Somewhere buried deep under the awful breast plates and strange contempt for poultry there's a version of this that would have questioned the Dorian Gray-ness of what The Substance could be. Men's depravity being materialized on canvas in a darkroom while the same shame of women's has to leave that room and go out in public to get the groceries. Hundreds if not thousands of gallons of blood later it didn't reach that level of commentary. But I'm not a horror person so who knows.

Beats you over the head with Diana's mental health issues/bulimia/self harm to the point that it feels very dangerous and disrespectful to show, serves to boil her down into nothing more than those struggles when in reality she was a complex, whole person. Tries to draw a parallel between Di and Anne Boleyn that if it weren't so one note might have actually been useful in someway. Honestly just felt like they were capitalizing on Diana's story to play out…
