Quite enjoyed the first half, but then around halfway it jumped the shark and became a bit too melodramatic and broad. Was still good, but a step down. Overall pretty but then in the second half with some shots that felt jarringly low budget. Glad I watched.

Ultimately a little too inscrutable for me. I got the general concept, the incongruence between this domestic tale and the horrors of Auschwitz in the background, and the sound mixing I thought was masterful in keeping an awareness of this dynamic always simmering. But things like the black and white nighttime scenes, the poisoning of the river and (?) father, the flash forward at the end, all of these had varying degrees of emotional resonance, but left me feeling like…
Until the movie started I thought I’d already seen this film, but apparently not, it’s just become cultural touchstone enough that I’d misremembered. And I see why. The movie has an I inventive concept, well executed, with jokes that land and well choreographed action sequences. It made me want to eat well.

It was a little slow, but I thought the acting and cinematography were both great. Especially appealing were the steeliness and chaotic sexual energy of the lead. I walked out feeling slightly let down by the ambiguous ending, but I see also how it worked for the film, and it’s growing on me. Finally, the lawyer was hot in a vulpine way.

On reflection, bumping it up to 4 stars from 3. The choice the son made at the end has stayed on my mind, I’ve found it increasingly profound
