So much to love here; a unique story about queerness that taps into some almost-indescribable feelings tied to growing up feeling like you should actually be someone else. For all its promise and poignancy though, this film is hugely let down by its inelegant script, which at times pushes the dialogue dangerously close to the ever-feared category of ‘cringe’. The actors do a good job with the cheesy lines and stilted text that they’re given, but it’s a shame that this film couldn’t let its metaphors speak for themselves.

Somewhat too long, but satisfyingly scary. Nicholas Hoult is fantastic, but for what this movie was going for, the film needed to be much less about him and much more about Ellen. Went in expecting a film centred around the complexities of women’s desire, and saw instead lots of guys in hats chasing a monster and talking about a woman’s ‘hysteria’. Still enjoyable, but not as interesting as it had potential to be.

This film is so bad. It took a great idea and a few astute trains of thought, and ran them off the rails with racial stereotypes, DO-YOU-GET-IT-NOW? style humour that treats its audience like the idiots it's portraying, and such a simplistic idea of the problem it's trying to satirise that it comes off as stupid itself. Truly terrible execution of what could have been a good movie before the scriptwriters got their hands on it.
