If Kubrick made a 2000s teen movie with a new wave soundtrack.
The scenes at Petit Trianon are a particular favourite — Coppola conveys the faux arcadian retreat beautifully.
The aesthetic borrows heavily from Barry Lyndon (the films share a costume designer — Milena Canonero), here infused with girlish candy pink.
Like much of her work ,it centres on the theme of female alienation and ultimately disastrous naivety.
