There's something unfunny about Chaplin films in general. They're too sentimental to be funny. Watching a slapstick form of Nazis harassing jews in the ghetto is very awkward, but the sentimentality is present, so anything resembling humour is beside the point. There's a number of quite poor slapstick scenes that would have been weak and obvious even in the silent era, let alone 1940, and which are painful in 2025. Straining desperately to be funny, straining desperately to be meaningful, straining desperately to be relevant.
