  The Holdovers 2023

  A heartwarming meander through 1970’s New England. 
  The festive sprinklings mean it’s a shame it wasn’t released around Christmas however viewing it in Jan seemed to intensify the retro and nostalgic feel from the setting and grainy film. 
  Despite not passing the Bechdel test it was a perfect rainy Sunday afternoon watch in which shed I a few sentimental tears.

  Jarringly bad at several points- almost but sadly not close enough it to be enjoyably bad. 

  Confused plot lacking tension.

  Laughably bad cgi which completely ruins shocking and unsettling scenes. 

  Noticeable sound mixing issues with I assume dodgy ADR  

  Penelope Cruz is the best thing in it but her character is under used and can no way make up for Shailene Woodley’s performance ( I genuinely didn’t know if she was meant to be playing an American or Italian character).

  Depressing in a slow mundane way. Not enough happens but I guess that’s the point.
   But ultimately another success in Coppola’s niche of caged bird narratives.
