I’ve written and re written this review three times at this point, so I’ll just keep it simple. So many revenge stories ask the question “was it worth it?” The answer is usually no, while those daring enough to say yes don’t usually expand on that in a compelling way. I Saw the Devil asks “was it worth it?” and answers its own question with “yes, and don’t you feel disgusting for thinking so?” The only words I can use to describe the ending are malevolent catharsis.

Exhibit A 2007
I felt like I just watched a real world violent disintegration of a family and I wasn’t meant to see it. Amazon prime spoils the ending in the movie preview, but it really doesn’t matter because you can guess how it’ll end five minutes in but you still can’t look away. Like watching a car crash in slow motion.

The Fly 1986
I’ve seen a lot of horror movies, modern and old. Some of the older ones are fantastic, but through a lens of “you have to understand the limitations of the time”. Some still stack up effortlessly against modern movies, and this is one of them. I imagine the practical effects are just as horrific and shocking now as they were 20 years ago. Grotesque, sad, romantic, horrifying. Amazing movie that took years off my life.
