    Anora

    ★★★★

Anora doesn’t feel like your typical Best Film winner, but I’m glad it won (even if they spent $18 million on the Oscar campaign for a $6 million movie… but that’s a whole other discussion.) The performances are impressive, and the fast-paced, unexpected plot full of sex, fun, love, and reality feels incredibly fresh. It’s funny in all its chaos and hits emotionally when it all comes crashing down. Great stuff!

    ★★

Starts off with strong build-up and real promise but loses its soul as it goes on, becoming sloppy and, well, a bit dumb. It’s not really an action movie, nor a drama… maybe it’s a crime thriller? I don’t know, but I think this is why the film feels directionless. Aaron Pierre and the sheriff were perfectly cast though.

Yes, it’s good! Romulus easily ranks among the top three films in the Alien franchise. The art direction is incredible, with references and a deep respect for the original two films. The group of characters this time around felt authentic, with believable motivations—something I haven’t felt since Aliens (1986). David Jonsson delivers a fantastic performance as Andy; his expressions are pure gold. Is it a perfect film? Well, not quite... The ending felt a bit too drawn out, and, more…

A beautiful and touching story with excellent performances. It’s sophisticated but never too emotional. What struck me most is how well balanced and fair the characters are written, each with their own hopes and fears. No antagonists here. They feel so real it’s heartbreaking. Truly a great film from beginning to end.
