The Tyrant 2024
Watched because of it's supposed connection to The Witch. They should have committed to making this a full 6 or 8 episode miniseries wherein plot beats and characters are given more time to be fleshed out and developed. Instead we got a long and erratic movie chopped into 4 pieces for seemingly no reason. The main saving graces are Lim, played by Cha Seung-won, who is a fun character, and the action which is pretty frequent and gnarly

This is far too scattershot - it tries to do so much but it ends up failing to do enough. Not funny enough for comedy, not thought provoking enough for sci-fi, and not tense enough for thrillers. Which is a shame because there is good here (also because big budget, mostly original, sci-fi is rare these days). The performances are great, Pattinson's weird accent works perfectly, and Bong can still direct the hell out of a scene, injecting plenty of energy to keep things from feeling languid. It's just unfortunate it doesn't come together for me as well as his other films do

John Wick: Chapter 4 2023
More varied action scenes, and just the absurd spectacle of the whole thing, gives it a leg-up over previous entries and helps the long runtime fly by. All the actors are in top form, but I have to give a shoutout to Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins - they were so damn good.
