watching inland empire was a spiritual experience for me
i was stone cold sober too
the way that the film evolved wasn’t always to my liking but it was constantly recontextualizing itself in a way that i did like
at first i thought the film was about laura dern and this film she’s in
then at the midpoint more like the beginning of act 2 we lose the ground and unlike his other films that do this i genuinely felt…
i like the premise A LOT but the script holds it back from being great
loved the mood/tone
this is a movie that understands suicide really well
understands pain really well
the editing has that 2000’s cringe factor to it
but there’s something about it that feels familiar and nostalgic that i enjoy
they had all the pieces to make a great movie
the script truly just needed more work
probably the closest thing i’ve seen to a genuine Y2K cyber movie, so far
it captures the technology of the early 2000’s in such a rich style:
where it was and where they thought it was going at that time
even parts of where the culture was at
they captured it masterfully
but the aesthetic isn’t the crux
the script itself has so many moving pieces
it’s hard to see where it’s going but so straightforward at the same time…
