Its fun! Completely devoid of subtlety & delightfully uncomfortable. Visually beautiful. Themes are intriguing but a little underbaked. The schism between 17 and 18— the way different aspects of the psyche can be more or less pronounced through different iterations and, in their specific case, in direct response to different iterations of the self is extremely compelling, but doesn’t really take centre stage amid the many many tonal and thematic plates spinning throughout this film. I really did have fun both during the screening and in thinking it all through afterwards, though. Don’t expect something particularly earth-shattering and I think you will too :)

Editing this review after learning more about the people behind Door III to apply my extremely niche perspective:
The outcome of this film suddenly makes perfect sense to me upon realizing that this is a collaboration between director Kurosawa & writer Chiaki Konaka, who I know best for his work on Ultraman.
What works for this film is the roots of Kurosawa’s distinctive directorial style that he would go on to perfect in his more notable endeavours. If that aspect interests…Translated from by
