  This is by no means high wanky cinema but five out of five for sheer enjoyment. They kept things manageable plotwise, the gore was incredible, the tension was proper thriller-like, and it all went off without a hitch. The comedy was genuinely mood-lightening, rather than being shoehorned in and mismatching. Had a great time. Went with my mother and we cackled all the way through.

  Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2021

  It's not a high brow movie oozing intelligence, but it IS a very sweet coming-of-age adventure flick oozing.... ectoplasm.

  In all seriousness, the special effects were fantastic, the plot was decently solid (there was never a moment where I was internally screaming WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS) and that little girl in the lead was an absolute star. The kids were great, the adults were great, and the whole thing flip-flopped between gentle/silly laughs, some tense action sequences, and some seriously touching moments.

  Plus, it didn't feel fanservice-y at all. (Which is the ultimate fanservice imo.)

  Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker 1999

  Awesome contemporary social commentary and that crowd is amazing! But it has a super sexist edge to it that I really didn't like. Rock does make a point to say there's no point in being sexist or racist or homophobic, but then he upholds some of those structures and it's pretty disappointing in places.
