I wish that Vera Jo Reigle’s unbelievably depraved murder would’ve been presented in a more sober manner. The documentary sometimes veers into spectacle with its showy and poor editing choices. It works better when it simply sticks to interview footage woven into a narrative, because the filmmakers did fortunately get access to many people. This isn’t a wacky tale; they’re real events, the telling of which come with a responsibility of dignity. I don’t believe the filmmakers don’t know this, it’s just that works of true crime must be particularly rigorous to be good.
Not entirely sardonic, not entirely earnest, this admittedly entertaining portrait of a ridiculously horrible man in a matching system oscillates in tone in a way that makes it feel a bit unfocused.
In the first 40 minutes we spend with Cléo and her entourage, our main character’s struggle with the reality of being perceived through a gendered lens is boiling under the surface. The erosion of her selfhood is encouraged in the role she is assigned. For example, during a rehearsal, she performs for her songwriter, her pianist, her housekeeper and, also, us, and sings about being “an empty house.” This metaphorical house is one with an exterior that Cléo takes great…
While this cult classic could've benefited from putting as much care in its satire as it did in its special effects, it remains undeniably fun.
