M. Night movies are like bodega sandwiches at this point. You know they’re not gonna be mind blowing, but they’re consistent and they go down easy. He’s not spending hours in the kitchen, slaving away to make the perfect sandwich, but he is making a sandwich that’ll be ready on schedule. Maybe there’s a funny flavor in there that doesn’t really belong. It’s not a bad flavor. Just confusing. It probably won’t be there the next time he makes a sandwich. It’ll be replaced by a new, strange flavor that none of us could possibly predict.

Kramer vs. Kramer 1979
Years ago I read “Story” by Robert McKee, and in it, he referenced this movie constantly as an example of a near-perfect script. Sometimes you watch something where you clock how good the writing it, you’re knowingly charmed by how well-written it is. This movie makes you forget you’re watching another persons writing. It quietly engrosses you until you’re completely invested in every moment. Incredible writing, subverting the easy way out especially in the third act. I really enjoyed getting to spend the last hour and a half with these characters.

When presented with the opportunity to fix the way the show ended, with Big and Carries reconciliation being rushed and underdeveloped, this movie chose to rush and underdevelop Big and Carries reconciliation. Apparently all you have to do to make up for leaving somebody at the alter is copy-paste a bunch of historical love letters in their email. 3/5 in terms of movie but 5/5 in my heart this movie was a fucking rollercoaster and I ate up every second of it.
